I've ridden this road a number of times and I love it. Plenty of visibility, hazards easily picked out and those fast straights are awesome. Every time we go to N. Yorks, this is the road we do without fail.

There are some great roads in N' Yorks but this is right up there with the best.

I agree, great road, some brilliant bends and drops, but too many tourists and traffic and I went on morning mid week.

Did this route twice at the weekend. Some great overtaking on the straights on Saturday afternoon as we followed the traffic to the coast at Whitby, but Sunday lunchtime on the way back was pretty much deserted heading towards Pickering, so managed to hold some speed for a good stretch. Great scenery, almost made me turn around and do it again, as the weather was fantastic.

An excellent road either in a car or on a bike, yes you get sunday drivers on a run out to the coast for fish and chips but there are plenty of spots to get past, one section has a drop into a bend then up the hill you can see for a good mile up the road and overtake on the way down and through and up the bend & hill, always puts a smile on my face. Can be busy with plod on a weekend in summer time, but have never seen more than one car about.

11 july 2008 rode it both ways, weather great, lucky for me i can ride mid week so very few tourists. what a ride, three of us rode that day not one cop to be seen, long very fast straights open corners (apart from hole of horcum) more interesting nearer to Pickering but very good fun all the way wwould recomend this ride to most people may not be technical enough for the very good/fast riders though.

Whitby Abbey was the setting for the Synod of Whitby where the date for Easter was finally settled, following the A169 south from here, a short excursion from this road takes you to Grosmont, a historical railway station lovingly restored by enthusiasts to it's original 1836 form. Continuing further on the A169 takes you next to Goathland, a village dating back to Viking times. The road then winds you through steeply banked lanes in Moorland towards Pickering.

A good road, but needs to be travelled at pace to be testing. Obviously very risky due to the amount of tourist traffic, even getting busy midweek now as summer progresses. However, visability is very good, up to 2 miles in places. The hole of horcum attracts a lot of visiters- be respectful, slow up for this small section.

A regular run as part of the Yorkshire TT. Not as good as Helmsley to Stokesley but still a good road. Can get a bit windy up on tops and a liitle cool too, just make sure you do it on a fine day as the rain is horizontal up there.

This is a brilliant road if you can get out midweek or early/late season as it is generally pretty quiet. after going to Pickering why not turn around and go back to Whitby, the hole of Horcum on the way back is like the corkscrew at Laguna and you can always indulge in fish and chips in Whitby.

somewhat boring, long starights, a couple of good bends except the most southern bit which is brill! And coppers too.

Did this at the weekend (20/03/05).. still fairly early on in the season but there were plenty of bikes out and very minimal police (but that could be due to the time of year). It would be a good route except for people out on day trips and the few villages/40mph sections you have to go through every few miles.. oh yeah and watch out for the biggest pheasants ever seen by man - I swear the two that walked out on me were like Emu's!!

good route but not really a good experience, unless you happen to be very local and can nip out when conditions are right. too many tourists (proper tourists I mean!) when the sun shines, esp at the weekends, which is when most bikers will be able to get there! The police aren't stupid either, contrary to popular belief. Early morning is good, late evening too or obviously midweek but make sure you know where the sun is shining from (and you might think it does from yours) because at either end of the day it is quite low and can be right in your eyes. Have fun, enjoy the views but be careful.

A great combination of straights, corners and changes in elevation. Check out the Devil's Punch Bowl (Hole Of Horcum). Can be busy during peak periods but otherwise very good.
