Rode down The Umbrail Pass from Stelvio on 10th October 2015. Often overlooked for the straight over route up and down Stelvio but you really should make some time to do this. The gravel section has now been asphalted and overall the road is in excellent condition. At this time of year the Larch trees are stunning as they turn.
I took it from Stelvio down to St. maria what is not best way how to enjoy that road, but it´s nice. Maybe not so spectacular as Stlvio...
Very entertaining road. I did it in September 2005 and to be honest, hardly noticed the lack of tarmac bits.
Good pass! Once you come from the Ofenpass you can use the Ofen-pass to the epic Stelvio-pass. One warning though: a part of this pass is not covered by tarmac. So once the sand does pop-up, take it easy and ride out, after about 3,5 miles the good tarmac is back.
Another Famous and spectacular alpine pass joining Switzerland to Italy.
