I live in Kendal so use this route frequently. Its a great route off season and during the week but can get a bit busy with car bound tourists at other times. A must if you e up in this area. Very good chippie other side of road from Penny Garth cafe!
I use the roads in this route alot myself and can agree its a great route. Buttertubs Pass is fairly well known as Top Gears Clarkson often raves about it being his favourite road in the UK. For those who dont know thats the road running south from the B6270 into Hawes village. Whilst there, stop for a brew at the Penny Garth cafe - often mentioned in the Bike magazine as its on their 440 test route.
Another one of my favourite routes in the area. Off the beaten track a little in some parts, mainly B roads or unlisted - just the way I like it. Generally good road conditions, a little gravel in places, a few sheep wandering around but overall ok and do-able on any bike. Some good scenery, but dont look for too long or youll be in a stone wall or hedge! Also, plenty of oportunity to get some air for those inclined! Part of the route includes Buttertubs Pass, not that well known. Quite a few spots to refuel the bike and rider or just to click away with the camera. Never seen the police on the route itself, but the approach roads are hot spots on weekends. The route takes in 4 popular biking stops for anyone who wants to check out bikes and have a chat.
